Moulay:

Moulay is a small village about 20km North of Essaouira and the Bouj Windsurf Centre is right in front of the break.

Moulay beach and village

Moulay Conditions:
Intermediate to expert wave sailing: Strong sideshore wind from the right with atlantic surf.

With a stronger and more consistent sideshore wind than Essaouira, Moulay offers one of the best wave spots just outside Europe. The waves are generated by storm systems in the Atlantic breaking predictably on the rock reef and point in front of the Centre. Unlike many good wave sailing locations the wind is not gusty inside the break, making getting out easier. The waves break on the reef, well off the beach meaning there is little or no shorebreak except at very high tides. Much of the time in the late Spring and Summer the swell is about waist to head high, and with a channel between the reef and the point it is easy to get out, making the conditions suitable for improving wave sailors as well as advanced wave sailors.

However in the winter with 2 - 5 meters waves this is a spot for confident wave sailors only.

Moulay action

Our equipment rental prices are pretty good and if you're coming out for just a few days on the back of a good forecast it could easily be cheaper than bringing your own equipment.

Moulay is a friendly place, with the Pro centre and the stylish Lawama’s café / restaurant as the hub of the windsurfing activity. Although there isn't much choice for eating out in Moulay Lawama's can cater for all needs and is ideally situated overlooking the reef and point break offering breakfast, lunches and evening meals at reasonable prices. Expect to pay around 6-8 euros for a good meal. There are also a couple of basic and cheap local cafes.

Everyone speaks French as well as Arabic, and many of the people in the windsurfing and kitesurfing community in Moulay speak English.

Bouj Windsurf Adventure will book your accommodation for you and arrange your taxi transfer from the airport.

Essaouira:
Essaouira Conditions:
Beginner to Advanced: Freeride conditions and some wavesailing, Sideshore wind from the right with some atlantic surf in the southern corner of the bay.

Essaouira offers windsurfers and kitesurfers the opportunity to surf in a whole variety of conditions. In the summer months, you can count on finding a slight wind chop to flat conditions in the morning, with very small waves building in the afternoon at the far down wind end of the bay. Wave conditions are bigger on the southern side of the bay in spring and autumn, but they are almost always smaller than Moulay.

Likewise the wind is between 5-10knots less than Moulay on average sometimes considerably more gusty.

With lighter wind in the morning Essaouira is also be suitabe for beginners.

Mixed conditions in Essaouira bay

Sidi Kaouki:
Sidi kaouki Conditions:
Intermediate to expert wave sailing: Strong side offshore wind from the right with atlantic surf.

Sidi kaouki is a long sandy beach about 30 minutes drive from Essaouira and 45mis from Moulay. Like Moulay the wind tends to be stronger here than at Essaouira, but it is more offshore and beach break rather than a reef break. Neverthless it regularly offers good conditions

Weather:
The annual wind pattern tends to be similar to that of the Canary Islands. The summer trade winds are accelerated by strong thermals from the desert, particularly during the spring and early summer when temperatures inland can be very hot. Generally the wind increases throughout the morning and by mid afternoon can often be blowing a solid Force 6 - 8. Between the months of October to April, Atlantic storms produce large swells which offer excellent wave conditions all the way up and down the coast from Oualidia to Agadir. The winds, however, are a little less consistent and predictable in direction although it should usually be possible to either surf or windsurf on most days during the winter at or within a 25km radius of Essaouira.

Temperature range 16 degrees in January to 27 degrees in August. The daytime average temperature in Marrakech in June, July and August can often be up to 15ºC higher than Essaouira.
